Another good column - education on sustainability is sorely lacking at all levels, K-12 and college. However, I would suggest that at many campuses the programs are interdisciplinary in nature, meaning a student has to get outside of their department often times. A couple of nice examples are at Tufts, where the Tufts Institute of the Environment pulls academic resources together (See http://www.tufts.edu/tie/) and UCLA where graduate students in any discipline can get a certificate as a Leader in Sustainability (great title - see
http://www.anderson.ucla.edu/leadersinsustainability.xml) It is disappointing that so many schools haven't done a better job of integrating sustainability more seamlessly into the curriculum. That was what I found in my own studies (so many years ago!) and not much has changed apparently.

Great post Joel. As an architect, this ties in well with the fact that many architecture school curriculums still don't incorporate sustainable design and building tenets, from passive to active systems. This on top of just a basic knowledge of ecosystems and the impact buildings have. This does not apply to all schools of course. But as a general comment, we (architects) need to be doing a much better job at educating the future.

At Groom Energy, we have been working with a number of colleges to improve efficiency. Another opportunity is to _directly_ connect college communications and programs to reduce Co2 Footprint and energy use. Most students probably think they are reducing Co2 footprint by going trayless and recycling, yet go back to their dorms and leave lights and heating on. Lights and heating usually account for 50-80% of footprint. Students need to also have "open window audits" along with trash audits.

I am consistently interested in this issue. I am a strong advocate of the 4 day school week to help conserve energy. Additionally, I believe it helps in the educational efforts in all areas.
