It's a very good point. I didn't know until much later in life that half the drinking water in our part of the country came from groundwater tables. Makes you better understand why you should avoid put chemicals in the ground.

I still couldn't tell you a native plant by genus or species. That's after 16 years of schooling locally. Something is awry and it does play into how we respond as consumers and citizens.
